Revopoint Trackit Review

Been putting some time into the Revopoint Trackit lately and thought I’d give some honest thoughts for anyone looking at getting into larger scale 3D scanning / reverse engineering.

Overall, I’ve been really impressed with it for the price point.

Pros:

• Very affordable compared to a lot of optical tracking scanners on the market.
• Accuracy has been great for what I’ve used it for.
• Far less markers than traditional scanning workflows.
• Biggest advantage for me being able to move the object (or move around it) without losing tracking or having to stitch together multiple scans afterwards. This saves a surprising amount of time.
• Once setup properly, scanning larger objects becomes very efficient.

Cons:

• The obvious one… don’t wear hi-vis, I found out pretty quickly the tracker thinks you are one giant marker.
• Reflective surfaces can interfere with tracking. I had this happen onsite where a galvanised shed was getting picked up and causing issues.
• Setup takes a bit of time and needs some room around the object.
• There are a lot of cables between the tracker, scanner and laptop — easy to trip over or accidentally move something.
• The scanner itself is fairly bulky due to the tracking setup which can make getting into tighter areas difficult.
• Transport is no joke — probably two large checked luggage cases worth of gear.
• Needs a decent laptop to run properly, so there is more to the setup than just the scanner itself.
• Calibration and setup become more important than with smaller handheld units.

For me personally, I’ll probably reserve this unit for larger objects and assemblies where the tracking system actually saves time. For smaller parts, I still think it’s easier to throw down some markers and use a simpler setup.

But all in all for the price point and accuracy, I think Revopoint have done a really good job with this unit.
